These days, plastic surgery has become popular to not only celebrities but also general people in Korea. As this phenomenon is getting popular, the area of plastic surgery has been gradually developing so even Korea is called ‘the country of plastic surgery’. There are several causes which made this phenomenon prevail. In the early days, the western standard of beauty came to Korea as the western culture has been introduced. With the beauty standard, people started to seek big eyes, sharp nose and small face like a western beauty and consequently this phenomenon got connected to have plastic surgery. Also, as another cause, it can be related lack of self-esteem. If they have high levels of self-esteem, they wouldn’t be willing to change their own appearance in endurance of pain from the surgery. That is, because people have no confidence on themselves as it is, they try to be another one who looks better through having plastic surgery. Third factor is lookism which is rampant in our society. People tend to judge others only by their appearance and the beauty has a more competitive power with this tendency. As a result, people turn ever more to the plastic surgery not to be behind in the competition. Lastly, mass media encourages the plastic surgery fad in viewers. Mass media describes the beautiful celebrities as a symbol of superiority so they can become the object of envy to general people. In addition, mass media makes a society which suggests having the plastic surgery by introducing programs such as ‘all about plastic surgery’ or ‘plastic surgery guide’. Regardless of its cause, the plastic surgery craze is a big current trend which reflects our society. However, we need to care about inner beauty as well as the outward appearance.
